View Full Version : Group Buy: front tow hooks

Brian
07-28-2006, 01:49 AM
I had some steel tow hooks made up as a group-buy. They are made of thick steel, and painted red like many of the other tow hooks out there. Strong enough to pull you out if you're stuck. For the front of the car. Should meet requirements for most sanctioning bodies.

If you don't like red, but still want a tow hook, feel free to spray paint it steath black so you don't look like a ricer boy ;)

$24 each plus shipping. Red only.

Fitment:
Bolt to the bottom of the front bumper mounts (horizontal), or to the stock tow-hook holes (vertical). Fits the te72 when bolted to the stock towhook location, you'll need to trim the valence/lip.

6 mounting holes so that you can choose how far you want it to stick out. Will fit rear bumper mounting points, but won't work with stock bumpers or JDM bumpers without extensive modifications. Will work fine if your rear bumper skin is ziptied in place, with no rebar.

SOLD OUT LONG TIME AGO.

Thanks for looking

Hmmm... not sure how the bolt spacing is on the ae92... you may not be able to get more than 1 bolt in... but there will be 6 bolt holes. No gaurantees.

It WILL fit the ae86, te72, and a bunch of others. Checked the bolt spacing on those cars already.

I wonder if they will fit on my TE31. Hmm...

They fit the 80 corolla, when bolted to the side, where the stock tow hook lives.

Yes, they should be ready for formula D in august.

It can mount to the underside of the frame horns, where the old bumper bolts used to live. Or you can mount it on the side of the frame horn where the old tow hook used to live. You'll have to find some bolts to mount it, not zipties :p

If you install some JDM bumper "brackets" your car will be much better protected in a parkinglot incident.

Sure, that should be no problem. I'll set one bare one aside for you.

Now that we have enough interest, I'll get a firm quote from the machine shop and get the production started. I hope I won't have too many left over afterwards ;) As soon as the quote is firm, I'll set up the payment details, and figure out the shipping costs.

Thanks everyone!

This is what it looks like, bolted to the front of a zenki bumper, vertically to the stock tow hook mounting points.

You can also bolt it horizontally to the bottom of the bumper mounting bolts.

The six holes give many options for how far it sticks out, etc etc.

$24 + shipping.

Get them while they're still available!

They can easily be painted black or any other colour. Please see the first post. Most corolla owners already have a spraycan of black paint.

If the tow hook is removed, there is a small slot in the front bumper, that is barely visible from 5' away. If anyone asks about the slot after a close look at the bumper, I tell them it's for a tow hook for track days and whatnot. However, I don't plan on removing this hook evar, unless i get a VI ticket LOL. Then the stock hook might get put back.

If the eyes are mounted horizontally with the 2 large bumper bolts, the bumper slotting blends in with the factory holes. No trimming of the zenki lip. On aftermarket JDM bumpers like jBlood, etc, the openings are large enough for the hooks to fit without any cutting at all.

It's not for guys who want their car to look stock. Function > form.

I'll have to admit, it takes balls to cut up a JDM OE bumper and lip. It kinda hurt a bit, but in a good way. :p

If anything...why not paint the tow hooks black? it's not as if the tow truck guy at race track will miss the massive thick metal loop sticking out of the front of the car when he goes to tow it out of the rhubarb.

Is there something I'm missing here? Seriously...fill me in! I need to understand this wacky new fad.

Thanks for your patience, and your patronage!

note: if you're running normal north-american spec bumpers, you will need longer bolts. The eyelet is mounted horizontally, and there is no need for bumper cutting of the bumpers for clearance. If you want to mount it vertically, you'll need to trim the plastic a bit.

the hooks fit on the rear, on my car anyway lol. it bolts right up to the frame rail where the bumper would go. since i dont run a rear bumper i fit it there.

for the record. these and all motorsport tow hooks are painted red for a reason. first it is stated in all forms of motorsport regulations that all tow hooks be painted red , second is that it is alot easier to see a big red hook than a big black one.

we got stuck in a ditch at a rally last year, another car came to tow us out, our hook wasnt visible enough so he hooked our car from a drain hole in the floor, needles to say he tore a big chunk out of the floor pan.

Okay, I got the shipping quotes. Apparently the price varies across the country, but to make things simple, I'm going to charge a flat rate.

The prices below include shipping.

$35 per single hook, shipped anywhere in Canada.
$65 for two hooks, shipped anywhere in Canada.

If you've ordered fender braces from me, they will be shipped at the same time, and you'll save a bit on shipping... $31/one, $58/two

Tow hook received, Thanks Brian!

But can anyone tell me the size of the bolt i will need to mount the hook. I have a fiberglass jblood kit mounted without using the stock bolts or jdm brackets. Its been kinda custom mounted so i gave away all my bolts when i sold my stock bumpers. :e

thanks,
Mike

if you're mounting it to the side of the frame horn, m10x1.25
if you're mounting it to the bottom, then the stock bolts work fine. dunno what size though ;)

Are they 100% AE86 specific or could they be used on an S13?

Brian

You're welcome to buy one and test-fit it. If you don't want it, you can ship it back, I'll refund the purchase price, but you'll be SOL on the shipping.

you can always use one of the existing holes on the towhook and drill out another one? i'm sure youcould make it work with some ingenuity (if it doesnt work as is)

also, for all those people wanting to know if parts are compatible with other models/cars you guys making parts should put up a detailed diagram. i.e. overall dimensions, hole size and spacing etc

just an idea

nope... dimensions are proprietary lol.

if you wanna try, it's no problem. I'm sure you can make it fit anything.
