View Full Version : the AMT rear tri bar

well i only made 4 and they are all sold. as seen on marvins and narfys cars.

congrats to the winner of the tri bar at the show and shine.

i am taking orders for more 180 each plus shipping. shipping in bulk is cheaper for easterners.

all bars will be black powder coated and will include hardware. drilling 2 holes is required. also slight triming of plastic trim is needed for clearance.
http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h197/amt_bucket/1amt047.jpg

depending on order time these can be made by early to mid september.

adam forgot to metion, that the rear seats are still fully functional... they fold up and down with no problems at all... and this bar is SOLID... felt the difference right away...

it will fit a coupe i'm 800% sure. Coupe is stiff and as my g/f says stiffer is allways better

adamturbo
08-25-2006, 05:32 PM
is the coupe not the same? the rear seats are ,so the brackets would be in the same position.

as for harnesses i would not use it as a harness bar. im sure its strong enough but for liability reasons i have to say no. it is designed to be strong for the way the forces are acting on it.

Ive never seen the inside of a hatch before but because theres a back deck on the coupe's i thought it might interfeer,no?

attached is a picture of the rear tri-bar with the interior pieces and seats in place.

here's my 2 cents, speaking from first hand experience (the red prototype is in my car):

i'm running F:8 R:6 springs on my car; as you probably know, some sort of body reinforcement is needed for this suspension setup. certainly there're a lot of products in the market for reinforcing the front structure - strut tower bar, front tri-bar, fender braces, shakkitto plates - but the choices for reinforcing the rear are rather limited. i have the cusco rear bar and it's not quite adequate. the rear end is still feels "lazy" (or lack of response due to body flex) in comparison to the front, which has all the reinforcing gadgets installed aleady.

after the rear tri-bar was put in, there was noticeable increase in body rigidity. no more "lazy" rear end ~~ i'm getting better feedback from the rear suspension that i could not feel before the rear tri-bar was put on.

guys, don't wait, buy it!! highly recommended.

thanks AMT and 86tuning for offering a good product to the DK community!

props to adam for another great product... functional and cheep...

I looked in a coupe and compared to narfy's car, it won't fit without some serious mods... and if it did fit, it won't make nearly as much difference as it does in the hatch.

Jimbo246
08-28-2006, 12:30 AM
Im curious what those major mods are? and howcome they would havta be made. Its also to bad i would havta do that cuz for the same price as a cusco one i could have alot stiffer rear end.

narfy
08-28-2006, 08:51 AM
the cusco bar will not make your car NEARLY as stiff as the AMT bar will...

marvinng runs a combination of both the cusco bar and the AMT bar... i run a combination of the TPS rear bar, and the AMT bar... and the AMT bar made the biggest difference...

you'll have to cut the bottom tab off your interior rear side panels... just the area where the panel goes around the rear seat lock bracket...

you'll also have to drill 2 holes where the bar meets the floor, and then slide a large plate with 2 threaded holes in it underneath where you just drilled a hole into, and line the plate up to the bar and holes you just drilled...

lastly, if you run rear carpet, you'll have to cut a slit in your carpet for the bar... i chose to install mine above the carpet...

it's bolt on; no major mods needed, just drill 2 holes and trim some plastic and carpet. if you decide to remove it, you don't need to fill the holes.

i've had the cusco one (see pic i posted earlier) for over 4 years and honestly the body still flexed quite a bit. it didn't stiffen the rear end as much as the AMT tri-bar did. with the cusco, you need to drill 4 holes and trim the plastic. it's a pain to level the cusco, and if you decide to remove it later you'll need to fill the holes otherwise water gets into your car. you may get similar result by adding the cusco tri-bar (i don't have that so no guarantee) but you'll end up paying more than the AMT tri-bar anyway.

have the fine people at AMT thought of redesigning the tri bar to fit a coupe?
if so i am interested for sure.
and i think this thread proved that there is some other interest for coupe owners here and there.

let me know what you think..i would like to support AMT and pick up what looks to be one of the nicest and most functional rear braces around. you know, provided it would work with my COUPE.

I saw that in your previous post, that and the seam/stitch welding. The fact that you felt a difference is what sold me :)

I don't have rattles sunroof/hatch after installing the aerodyne hatch bar. So that's no longer a concern for me. The only rattle I got after was one of the 8mm nuts holding the redlines I have in came loose and caused the center section to 'buzz' at idle. Easy fix.

Of course, I also have a CF hatch w/trd style wing and lexan rear window. That also helps with squeaks, Although I ran the aerodyne 5-6months with the regular hatch no sounds either.

I don't have rattles sunroof/hatch after installing the aerodyne hatch bar.

Funny, I also have an aerodyne bar sitting on the shelf. I haven't put it in yet, because it raises the cg of the car slightly... the AMT bar sits much lower LOL.

* back in the day, we'd roll our windows down, recline the passenger seat, and flip the rear seats down to lower the cg for stock class autoX.

Got it tonight and installed. I can definately feel a difference, WAAYYY stiffer chassis in the rear. I just put my es100's on the back after installing, which were hard(er) to drift on previously and had no issues sliding (I had been running 'Warrior HR' tires in rear, made by bfg - good, long lasting, predictable, but do chunk a little under really hard 2nd/3rd gear use).

Definately changed my moderately understeering setup to an oversteer with just the bar. A quick tire pressure and shock setting change and its back to the way I need it for auto-x tommorow :)

Awesome product. Get one if you have a hatch.

The rear of the car feels even more stable/solid now than it did before, and I thought it was good with just the Ueo style bar!

After having this bar, would there be any point in still using a rear tower bar?

Backonthewagonsan
01-23-2007, 01:18 PM
you wouldnt need another rear strut bar.

this tri-bar is way more effective then a cusco rear bar.

Sideglide
01-24-2007, 11:36 AM
Oh I know its more effective, just wondered if it would help in ANY way to keep the rear strut bar AND the tri bar.

Backonthewagonsan
01-24-2007, 03:31 PM
yep you can keep the tri-bar and a rear strut bar.

the tri-bar goes directly behind your rear seats. a rear strut bar is usually mounted right by the shock towers. one of the guys on dk marvin has a tribar and a cusco strut bar and it works just fine :)

was just curious if you had a tentative time frame on teh coupe tri-bar dude?

Vik

So I got my Tri bar, set it in place and noticed a gap between the
base plate and the car at least 1/4 of a inch is that normal?
I was thinking it might cause the bolts to break or leave to much play.

adamturbo
02-13-2007, 07:14 PM
some cars have a gap and some dont, i will make you a shim plate for that, just slide in underneath. maybe loosen up the side bolts a bit before tightening base bolts, then tighten side bolts last.

Vik

dont worry about the shim plate i can make my own i was
just wondering if it was normalthanks the side to side fit is great
thanks and i was wondering about the AMT stickers got any?

Is this still avail? If so, can it be in Alumium? Much like most Cusco bars? Or better yet Titainium? Just a thought, anyone? ;D

aluminum would be nice, titanium even nicer, for the 1% that could afford that

Backonthewagonsan
02-15-2007, 10:20 PM
the weight difference isnt noticeable =P and like said above, who can afford aluminum/titanium?

adamturbo
02-15-2007, 11:40 PM
titanium is to difficult to get here in B.C and most places that sell it only sell quantity. i could do an alloy version but the price would almost be double.

if you havent got a bar yet and want one dont hessitate to long , of the 20 made 10 are left and once club 4ag is back up they will be sold...

i got mine installed today at AMT...holy cow....i am so impressed how such a simple design made so much different (wish i came up with this idea)..its suppressed a lot of the body roll i had...now i can input more throttle cause there are less roll...and more feedback coming from the rear..used to be so sluggish feeling...kittykatkittykatkittykatkittykating awesome buy...i highly recommend you to buy one ASAP these are seriously kittykatkittykatkittykatkittykating awesome.
