View Full Version : Cell Block Rd. 3 drift event

For those that missed out, this was so much fun! Great day and I learned a lot.

A couple things:
- drifting IS a lot of fun
- it's harder than it looks like in the videos
- just cuz you play video games and drift RC cars doesn't make you a good drifter. :)

Everyone was really helpful and supportive. Even tho other drivers knew it was my first time, they offered advice and tips. It showered a bit but dried up after lunch, which for me was perfect. I'd never really drifted before.

Trent and the gang ran a great event, everything was very organized with flags, FRS radios, course maps, etc. They even had handouts for each driver with course layouts and a full page of step by step 'how to drift' instructions for the noobs. They had some nice big posters to show the drivers at each drivers meeting what was happening. Great ideas for learning.

I started with some donuts, and got used to modulating the throttle. By the afternoon, i was e-braking into donuts, out of many tries I got maybe 3-4 that were decent - not super smooth but decent. :) Towards the end of the event, I mustered a sloppy figure 8, but I was happy. There's always more to learn for next time. I didn't event try clutch kicking, I just wanted to get used to being sideways, even if it was at slower speeds.

There was plenty of track time for everyone. I think the only thing that threw me off a bit was the banks, but it was good to try and adapt to them. A flat area would be awesome, but any venue that's open to drifting is great. I chatted with the lady that ran the facility, and she was very nice. She liked the fact that the event was being run professionally and "liked the diversity" of the drivers and events, not just oval track racing.

For those that were worried about the widths, I was too - but after I warmed up, I forgot about the walls. The main area was wide enough. I was concentrating more on all the crap I had to do! Gas, clutch, turn the wheel, e-brake, gas, counter steer... next time I'll try clutch kicks!

Thanks for a great event guys, and the driving tips too. I'd recommend this event to anyone starting out. There's a good progression from beginner to intermediate to advanced, and there was no pressure. Even though the experienced guys were drifting the bank (I was pretty impressed with some of the locals) no one seemed to mind that I was happy doing my little e-brake donuts.

Pics to follow. *sorry if they are small or blurry, my camera doesn't zoom well.

if you got permission, would you be able to scan and post those handouts?

That IS Paul. After the GTR crashed into the wall via help from Steve, he wanted to drive for the rest of the day, so he took his car out. Not letting Steve drive it. :)

Looks like you had a great time Terry! I wish I could have gone but I didn't have time to source out tires. Next time for sure.

Sounds like the event was done quite well too. Can't wait to try it out.

I had fun, I was having trouble being cosistant on the full bank, but felt I had a couple of crowd pleasers. :) I took my mom for a run around the big bank, we were just feet from the wall at 100km/h entry speeds, it was pretty exciting for her, well and me too. :) The next event will be in March, I will let you guys know as there is limited driver seats.

Side Topic:
What do you guys think of a Friday night or Saturday night event from say 7pm - 11pm? There would be a short warmup and then Manji and Bank open for the rest of the night, in March, or April.

Let me know.

Great pictures. Whoa, a pic where I'm actually countersteering around something... I'm speechless. Thanks god, I have some proof that i actually accomplished something. :eek2:

Trent, are there lights on both sides of the track? When we were there I noticed there was wires routed, but no lights. Kevin mentioned they might be installing some? A night event would be crazy!!

bmx269
02-13-2007, 10:52 PM
Those are the new lights for that back half, I guess that is the lights needed to complete the track lighting. A night event would be rad, problem would be that we would have to get there before 7pm to enjoy the time or else it would be a waste. Track can only be open until 11pm for noise laws, I guess we wake the prisoners or something. :)
