Are you using stock cams or aftermarket? I've read up a bit on this. I know that if you want to get rid of the VVT solenoid on the side of the head you should block the oil passage that supplies it with oil otherwise you risk bottom end damage. Mr John from Club4ag deleted the VVT on his 20valve and iirc blew up 2 motors, then after blocking off the oil supply to the solenoid he noticed around 40% increase in oil pressure. I think that if you're using stock cams it's best to keep the VVT, supposedly it doesn't make much difference on the dyno, but seat of the pants is said to be a different story, especially if you're using a standalone ECU.

You should just have a speedo cable from your trans to your cluster. There should also be a wire from your cluster to your engine ECU. My speedo hooked up exactly the same with my bluetop as it does with my ST.
Keep your VVT. It does more good than harm.
