That's a big list of To-do's! Keep us updated from now on everyday Trev, I want to see the "special treatment" you give to the car to make it that much more awesome.

I already contacted that guy and it's long gone.

Got the car half stripped down tonight, tomorrow I'll get that engine half stripped down. I'm torn between tearing it open and rebuilding it, or just throwing it in and hope for the best (it was running when it got into the accident). At the very least, I think I'll pull the pan off and inspect some bearings. I might also pull the head off and get it re-done and put in some ARP head studs and a decent gasket.

sorry that you have to deal with crappy cell phone pictures for now (camera battery died...again)

Removable rad cradle ftw (things sure got dirty over the summer)

Do these decals mean it's a JDM motor?

Well the good new is, I have the more desirable JDM SC motor...the bad news is it's going to need a rebuild.
One piston had a broken compression ring, and started losing the aluminum off the top edge of the piston above the ring groove

You can see where the aluminum was being deposited on the cylinder wall

crank looks like it'll have to be either polished, or turned down a size (and then polished) and bearings were looking a little used up too

Overall, the engine is showing signs of neglect (many missed oil changes), but is a perfect platform for me to build on. Now I have to start shopping for pistons...any ideas out there? I may as well try and build a bullet proof bottom end for this thing, so I'll be using everything ARP can throw at it, as well as better rods (and of course pistons). and sending everything out for balancing after the machining is done.

lol...don't you know it, but it should be killer when it's done.
While I'm waiting for required parts to arrive, I can start deburring the inside of the block and head (lots of rough casting remaining inside these engines), and maybe smoothen off the crank a little so it doesn't sling so much oil about.

Any weight you take off the crank has to be taken out of the pistons and\or rods btw. If your going with aftermarket pistons and rods the should be lighter then the stockers which will help.

Hopefully your crank just needs a polish. I'm not a fan of turning down crank journals, you loose the factory hardening process on em.

Just food for thought, you might be able to get a minty import SC motor for substantially less then rebuilding this one.

^It's unlikely I could get another one of these engines for under $1000, and for that price, who knows what would be needed internally. At the end of the day, I'll know I have a new motor.
I also hope that a polish will be enough.
Everything will be sent out for balancing after all the machine work is done.

Damn trevor you know how to do things big

I'm with rob thou you cant beat arias pistons, i think carillo (spelling?) makes a rod that is just as beefy as the stock ones but obviously alot lighter

also i'm not sure what the stock bore is on a gze 81mm? but if you do end up having to machine it to 82-83 you can drop your compression down a bunch, less compression=big turbo

its been rumored that the stock bottem end in a gze can handle up to 350-400hp toyota's overkill love child crank

I looked through the arias catalogue and didn't find any. I also looked through the wiseco catalogue and didn't find any GZE pistons there. I know I've seen some wisecos, somewhere for them, but they're only 8.5:1 cr. There's a place down under that has ACL forged pistons, but again, only in 8.5:1 cr. Ultimately, I think I would like to find a set of the factory ceramic coated 8.9:1 forged pistons.
