this method can also be used with a waterhose for a makeshift pressure washer, better than nothing

New tools! PA die grinder and 6" aluminum cut burrs. Sanding rolls should be here soon too! Friday I order the valve springs and pickup the head so I can play.

Started work on my flow bench, ended up using a USB wall wart for the 5vref, another for the 12v and my tired old multimeter to measure. Tomorrow at lunch picking up the piping to put it together. Actual voltages are 7V and 20v, however the Bosch AFM doesn't seem to mind from my testing here at home.. If tomorrow it doesn't seem to work I will throw some resistors on there to get the proper voltage.

how are you using a USB "wall wart" to get 5vref and 12v? im intrigued

USB is a 5v powered bus, I just took a wall wart (for my cell phone charger) and tapped a USB cable pin 1 (+) and 4 (-). Plug it into my cellphone wall charger and boom 5vref. Dug through a box of adapters and found a 13v one and used that for 12v. The actual voltage is registering 7v and 20v, but so far no magic smoke has escaped from the poor VW MAF.

It is actually a trick I learned from Dexter at NAPA training, He made a Toyota EVAP canister tester and I wanted to see how he made it, was pretty simple and trick. Used it a few times since then for things I needed 5v for.

Nice, I didn't know that you knew Dexter or attended any of his classes (maybe we talked about it but I totally forgot). I've always thought of using old AC/DC converters to play with sensors but never got around to doing it. The guys at work made me a 5v/12v power supply for prototyping =)

If/when you have the time you should do a quick write up, would be useful for lots of people.

Yeah I usually go when I have the time, just missed a Ford Fusion electrical one last week. Always learn something new from Dexter.

I probably will do a complete flow bench writeup if it works to my satisfaction.

All done of the flow bench , If I had my head back I would be testing this out right now. Still need to make the valve opening bracket, the laminate board for the top and to put the dowel pins to hold the head but without the head I can't really do that.

Here is a simple graph I got from taking values while blowing through the MAF.

Here is a conversion chart showing what the values mean on a standard VW MAF

Now it will be kind of crude because of differences in air temperature, but if I was to take my first number 1.6 and convert it to CFM, using a conversation factor of .4562 for air at 0 degrees at 0 sea level and at 1 atmosphere I get 9.124CFM. As long as I do the before and after at the same temperature and relative humidity I can get approximate CFM and see if there is increases in flow although the overall CFM in my case is slightly irrelevant, I just want to know overall flow graphically. I can put all this into a excel spreadsheet and it will do it all for me.

So it seems to work, Not that I had a lot of doubt about this part of it. I am dying to try this out with a head to see what, if any changes are registered. In hindsight I will need to lower the voltages down to 5v/12v as this will skew the voltages from that chart.

Minus the head, all the stuff pictured is mine plus a bit more like ECU and AFM.

    Also these.

    Booyah.

Not too hard really, I probably could have got the head but I don't think I want the hassle. Look for people that live in places where these engines were commonplace. NZ, Japan and AU? I am trading for a TE21 crossmember, steering knuckles and a 1600 badge with a guy in NZ because they didn't have T series engines in the e2 chassis, only k.

    New score!

    What is inside the boxes?

Pretty much BNIB Toyota AE86 steelies, missing one centercap(anyone have one?) Going to band them like brett did to his. I think they will look epic on the old yota.

Also ultra high temp coated most accessories

Toyota is taking over my room, there is a few days work worth of things to install in all those boxes and bins.

Also cleaned up the basement machine shop. Pretty stoked actually on it and installed a ring light on the spindle of the mini mill.

Got my head back today, looks AWESOME!

So I had to make a "tool" today, using a fan rheostat I made a speed controller for my die grinder.

Unfortunately the first setting when you turn it to on, is high. Brand spanking new 6" aluminum carbide

80 Grit complete on the exhaust side only, couldn't feel my hands anymore. 120 next.
