    Icon2 Dor's Blue Sapphire with one p RA20

I found this RA20 in a ladies front yard overgrown in prickle bushes and weeds growing through the floor boards and mould lining the interior. The lady had an emotional attachment to the car as her former husband who it belonged to died 20 years earlier and it hasn't moved since. I was able to get the car for a reasonable price with the promise of showing her the car once i had it running. Being a 1971 production ST model it came stock with the 18RG high compression motor. It was in no condition to run any time soon as the motor appeared to be seized and more weeds growing throughout it. Now that i am finally finished school for the time being I can finally start to get to work on it (I bought it in the summer of 2012). I dont have much money but I have the time and motivation. I haven't really welded before but i'm teaching myself as I go. Sitting for so long rust is inevitable.

    The plan (for now):
    rebuild 18RG NA with 10.5 compression w/ w50
    s13 front suspension and steering

This is the way I found it

Time to get a good look at the rust and pull the motor

The car used to win shows back in the day apparently with its hand painted pin stripes

Finally got it into a decent workspace

    s13 stuff vs ra20 stuff

Theres a fair bit of rust are each quadrant of the car. Im gunna start with the drivers area. Im pretty much welding stufff for the first time so if anyone has any input on techniques let me know!

Im using a dumpy 100$ flux core welder from princess auto. 20G

    Rocker ends didnt exist

    done the driver quadrant

Onto the passenger side. Original owner covered up a badly damaged rocker. Peeled off the cover to find this...

The other rear half of the rocker was torched off and replaced with another oem one. Poorly done...Going to replace

trying to get the proper rocker profile the best I can

    Look on 1stgencelica username Santos

he parts out cars and will ship nice rust free rockers from parts cars. almost any cut you want. arch to arch even.

might be easier and cheaper than making your own rockers.

the car would have come with the 18rc from factory, but many RG motors were swapped in.

Clay72 on here has a nice looking RG header and other bits forsale.

    good luck.

That's a score. That car has a bunch of valuable bits on it like the long hood vents, bumpers, and should have the flat tails. Good to see you are going to salvage the chassis.

I do have a bunch of RG stuff. Let me know if you'll need some stuff. I'm not going to try to make a fortune on it.

Thankss! and yeah I plan to keep the paint. Other then a few rust bubbles im amazed its still in decent condition.

Im looking for an 18RGU head (with the bigger valves) and some piston options as I need to bore it out atleast .040.

What do people think of those hypereutectic silicone compound pistons?

...without anything to back this up, I thought all modern pistons were a hyper-eutectic alloy of aluminum and silicon... In my understanding such an alloy helps match the coefficient of thermal expansion to that of the iron block.

anyways, yeah, aren't they all hyper-eutectic now?

I've got all of the parts to make the best possible combo of OEM stuff. 2 bigvalve heads, the bigger cams, some timing chain guides (not sure if i have all?) tensioners, a new timing chain, TRD header, timing cover, 18RG distributor, etc. I just have to give the pistons and rods a clean and a better look to make sure they are good condition.

If you are interested, PM me a list of what you need and I'll check my stock and assign what I think is an appropriate dollar value to the pieces.
