    Brandon's Rustbucket Resto-builds

Well I've been lurking on this forum for quite some time now but I figured it's about time I make a thread for my ****boxes.

What you are about to read is a terribly narrated chronicle of the many aimless automotive shenanigans put on by a broke-ass 19-year-old-kid. If you're looking for a well documented and organized build thread carried out by a proper, procedural ASE certified mechanic, then this probably isn't the thread for you.

It initially started with a rusted out '85 GTS coupe shell that I bought off Ratrolla back in November of 2011. This car was basically meant to be my guinea pig since I had limited mechanical experience and I'd never really dicked with a car before.

I spent 11 months gathering parts from all over BC and slowly getting everything ready to be put back together: full interior, GTS rear axle, dashing wiring harness, engine wiring harness, motor, trans, pedal assemblies, fuel/brake/clutch hardlines, the list goes on...

And then I bought this piece of **** '85 GTS coupe that my aunt bought brand new back in 1985:

Originally, she refused to sell it, citing that she was too attached to the thing, but 3 years of annoying phone-calls and awkward family dinners later, the car was mine for a mere $400. She had put 360,000km on the thing in its lifetime and I must say the mileage really shows...

Over the years the car has been stolen and recovered twice. These were left over from some of the previous theft attempts.

That '85 coupe shell looked like one Duy owned temporarily. At the very least, recognized the AE86FTW trunk lid lol. Hope to see your AE86 in the summer.

My plan for the coupe which I've now affectionately named "The Grey Smudge" is just a simple, clean restoration themed build with mild and tasteful modifications. I want to keep some of the character and originality of the car so no crazy engine swaps.

Managed to find myself a minty set of a quarter panels from a donor shell. I'll be getting these welded in along with all the other rust areas taken care of.

Here's my to-do-list so far for this car in no particular order:

    -replace the peeling window trims
    -replace all bushings
    -replace balljoints
    -replace tie-rod ends
    -install my AW11 manual rack
    -fix the gas gauge
    -replace wheel bearings
-replace the leaking clutch master cylinder
-get some decent suspension setup going
-install an LSD of sorts, I have a welded for the time being, will go aftermarket when I can afford it

I know it's hard to believe, but the car is from BC lol. She lived in an area where they salted the roads pretty heavily during the winter and decided that washing cars was overrated.

I guess I should also finally post some pics of the black GTS hatch that I bought a while back. She's stealing the spotlight from the coupe for a bit.

A little backstory on this car, I was actually told about it by a friend of mine. It used to belong to an elderly gentleman who was the original owner. It was well taken care of for the most part, always serviced at regular intervals at the dealership. But when he passed away he gave the car to his granddaughter. Well as it turns out, she couldn't drive stick, so she parked it for like 9 years and then I bought it. It only has 181,000 km on it and the timing belt was done in 1998 at 150k so it was only driven 31,000 km in the last 16 years.

I ended up getting it started after a quick tuneup in their driveway and I got Slipnslide4age to help me drive it home with no brakes lol.

The plan for this car is to just turn it into a reliable daily with some modest, tasteful upgrades and maybe some mild track capabilities should I feel indulged.

My to-do list for this car:

    -fix intake leaks
-fix exhaust leak on the downpipe
-fix the rust spots on the rear quarters
    -replace the driver side fender
-punch out the dent on the passenger side quarter
    -powdercoat all the suspension bits
    -fix the no-heat issue
-clean fuel tank and replace pump

Funny, my parents told me the same thing. I keep ignoring them. I like having at least 2 of everything whether it's cars or parts.

Small insignificant update, I bought a parts car recently, a super rusted out half GTS-converted SR5. The previous owner had gotten about halfway through the swap before he gave up on it. Then he abandoned the car at his dad's place and left it sitting in a marshy wetland for 6 years. His dad ended up selling it to me for scrap value.

    I bought this:

    To acquire this:

At first, the car didn't look too bad, but the previous owner had tried to rust-proof it by spraying bed liner over everything. So I peeled it back to reveal Ontario level-rust...

Half the rockers were gone, the frame rails near the trunk pan were just swiss cheese and underneath where the rear seats were supposed to be were just two giant holes through which I could touch the tires...

So unfortunately, the shell wasn't worth saving and on top of that, the car didn't have any papers.Ended up cutting it up for spare metal to go towards my black hatch.

Apart from the GTS rear end, the car also came with a spare set of kouki axle shafts, some Megan lowering springs, GTS fuel/clutch hardlines and what I believe to be a GTS dash harness.

***Sidenote if any of you guys ever get in an accident and need to source the metal panels to fix the damage, I'm saving the rear tail light panel and the front strut towers/rad support just in case.

    I don't know where you're getting 4 from, I only have 3 hehe...

Well technically 2.5 because 1 of them is just a shell with a motor sitting in it atm, nothing is hooked up.

Also, no the shafts aren't for sale, what happened to yours? I thought you had a pair.

Unless you got rid of a few I guess its three now.

    One hatch?
    two Zenki Coupe?
    One Sr5 hatch?

Fyi shells kinda count as a car regardless if it has nothing in it. Its the potential it has.. I hope your builds are coming along instead of adding more parts though lol.

I did but a bunch of stuff went missing last weekend.

Kinda sad resorting to stealing stuff. to keep their car float? I hope no one from dk community.

    1 GTS hatch
    2 GTS coupes

I cut up the SR5 hatch in the pics, it's in a million tiny pieces at the moment. I have a lead on another one though...

That doesn't surprise me, your place is pretty open to the public, and it's along a major road. I wouldn't reccomend leaving your stuff there.

FYI my offer still stands man, if you're worried about theft and you need anything stored away, I got the space, free of charge.
