What model year did we get the AE86 chassis in Canada/USA?

I always though we got them as model year 1984 but I recently saw a listing for a 1983. I know Japan got them as model year 1983, but did we?

    Cheers,

Japan doesn't really use model years, just actual production date.

Production for North America started in August 1983, which is 1984 model year. There were never any 1983 model years. Production for Japan started in May, 1983.

Awesome, thanks for clearing that up Jeff. Stupid western way of marketing...

So any model year 1984 USDM/CDM cars were all produced in 1983?

Is there an easy way to identify the month of manufacture? More specifically the actual day maybe?

    Thanks,

There are positives and negatives to the various ways. Here when a new model is released it gets its own model year, and it can be easy to identify changes and parts by the model year. In Japan you need to know more about the vehicle, because if someone says they have a 1990 Supra, it could be the earlier version with the sawblades and 7M, or it could be the newer one with the 5-spokes and 1JZ, they were both produced in 1990. Here one would be a 1990 and one would be a 1991. Or if someone says an 83 Corolla, it could be an E70 or an E80, but here an 83 Corolla is always an 83 Corolla.

    In any case, 1984 models were produced from 08/83 to 08/84, 85 from 08/84 to 08/85, 86 from 08/85 to 08/86 and 87 from 08/86 to 07/87. Zenki obviously from 08/83 to 08/85.

    In Japan, the models went 05/83 to 05/84, 05/84 to 05/85, 05/85 to 05/86 and 05/86 to 05/87. Zenki being from 05/83 to 05/85.

That's why you'll see some changes happening part way through the model years on North American cars, for example the headliner and sunvisors in some later zenki 85's have the kouki style with the felt, because they were already making kouki cars in Japan, but still producing zenki cars for North America.

The month of manufacture on North American cars is on the data tag on the driver's door. The month of manufacture on others can be determined by looking up the frame number in a catalog lookup. The exact day isn't easy to find without original paperwork for the car. It's not really stored anywhere other than at Toyota for older cars like the AE86. Might have to call Japan to ask, haha.

I never knew that Japan didn't use model years that makes soooo much more sense now hahaha

of course I've never really seen an 84
model year corolla in the states where I live but I'm sure they're out there

So if I understand correctly the earliest USDM/CDM chassis' were made in August of 1983?

Is there anyway I can do a catalog look up with the "frame number"? Is the "frame number" the VIN?

    Thanks,
