Hmm. I have no idea, but it's an interesting question. I do know that the monocoque is steel, and the body panels are made of duroplast.

I guess there's only one way to find out...

    A hungry man in Hungary

Today was my lucky day. I was eyeballing a Trabant wagon parked in front of a sidewalk, and I started to stare. The owner, an older gentleman, came out to his car, and I started talking to him about his beauty.

I then asked him if I could take some pictures of the engine. It was a 1.1! The last generation of Trabants came with a way better engine than the usual 600cc putter.

Of course, I asked him if I could buy it. He laughed, and said it wasn't for sale. As he started it up. He caught me staring again, rolled the window down, and said "gyerebe!", which meant in this case, "get in!"

So I got to ride shotgun in this beautiful car...Click image for larger version.

From what I understood, he gave the radio to his son, and that he had a second car, an old Renault. Other than that, there was much of the conversation I didn't understand. My Hungarian sucks. The seats were really comfortable. More so than my Corolla Seats.

Sorry, the last photo was blurry because I was so darned excited...

    A hungry man in Hungary

A really interesting update. May 14th: my last day in Szeged was blessed with a bunch of cool cars:

There was an antique car display at the ?rk?d mall:

This morning, I stumbled upon a bunch (like 8) prototype Civic R. 2L Turbo with Vtec. 310hp and a stupid fast time on the Nurburgring.

Saw this nicely modded Nissan outside the BME in Budapest:

Found this effing gorgeous Citro?n outside the Bratislava cemetery. Lots of the tombstones were in Hungarian, with splashes of German and Slovakian names. Interesting only for history buffs or losers. Back to the motorized horse-carriage:

I was just over there (Hungary) myself in August visiting family. My uncles a used car dealer so Ive been fortunate to try many cars out. I did manage to try my first Trabi, a 81' 601. Nothing like it.
Theres lots of unique and interesting cars in Europe, but as the wages are really low compared with the cost of living in Hungary, most people cannot afford nice newer vehicles.

If you have some cash saved up, there are open lapping days at the Hungaroring that are dirt cheap, and also track experience rentals that are reasonably priced (Porsche/Subaru/Mustang). Unfortunately winter is setting in so you will have to wait for spring.

Thanks for the info. Yeah, the wages are absolutely horrible. Minimum wage in Hungary is 500HUF per hour ($2.50 CAD), and 380 Euros a month in Slovakia.

    Besz?lsz magyarul?

    Igen, beszelek magyarul!

If you get the chance, the evening danube cruise thru budapest for 20cad was well worth it, and a nice view that otherwise one may not get of the city.
Also there is a sight seeing service that takes you on a tour of budapest in a trabi. I believe they let you drive if you want too.

There's still so much I want to see in Buttapest. I've been almost 30 times, and still have yet to check out Buda Castle (and the crypt), and the national museum. Thanks for the suggestion on the boat cruise; it could be a nice date night for my gf and I.

    What was your favourite?

Can you imagine getting in, first thing in the morning, and trying to drive off? What if you didn't notice...?

You think it was stolen? Since it's just steelies, I would have figured they got a flat and took it off to get repaired. But I've never been out of BC, so I don't know what people are like in that part of the world.
