Cheap turbos large enough for 1UZ single?

I am looking for 8psi max. Not considering a twin setup. Way too much plumbing.

    Could such a turbo exist?

Do I just use a smaller one and put it way out of it's efficiency range?

I want to put a turbo on my 425,000km LS400 just for the hell of it and as a mule for building a proper setup one day. Maybe swap the injectors and put a FPR on it with my wideband as the extent of tuning. It will blow up at some stage.

Why not a garrett turbo out of a 7.3 superduty powerstroke?

They are a dime a dozen, literally. Any wrecker will have a 7.3 laying around somewhere. They are fairly quick spooling and build 10-15 psi when being pushed by a 444 ci big block.
They are known for having the wg open at 7-8 psi which slows the boost down as well...

There are plenty of budget injector options for 1uz, and you could just find an SAFC or something lol.

    Ya, truck stuff.

A piggyback ecu and a rising rate fpr would be enough. The ECU is stubborn to accepting change, but will let you run low boost levels and maintain factory smoothness...from what I've heard.
You probably won't even blow it up.

The HX35 seems to be a pretty solid unit, at least the one in my truck has 360K on it and doesn't leak/burn oil. Should be lots of them around too.

I like the 7.3 idea Dug. As long as it doesn't have housings that are too goofy.

    Thanks gents.

I might be able to pull a 7.3 turbo from a ratted out camp truck too...

Ok, there are differences between the early 7.3's and late model 7.3's. Also the vans have no wastegate and a larger 1.15 A/R

The early 7.3's had a more aggressive compressor wheel that supposedly builds more boost.
