Icon10 Need some advise regarding engine swap for 1972 Celica?

For my 72 Celica ST, I might use the original motor or do an engine swap. Just doing my research right now. The swap motors that I have seen that interest me are the Beams with the 6 speed, 1uz with a manual trans, 18rg/2T. Not sure on other feasible options and what is out there. The biggest things of importance for me with the swap are it has to be a standard transmission, keep the original centre console. I also want to keep the original gauge lay out and speedometer if possible Which rules out the Honda F20C. Am I able to meet these goals with all of these swaps? I also found this Canadian Supplier: http://www.japandirectjapanese.com/home.php?cat=2 they have the Beams Altezza Motor/6 speed trans and wiring harness for what seems like a good price.

I love a v8 and the sound which is what is cool about the 1uz, but I imagine the the car will be quite front heavy with it and cause understeer when I am auto crossing. I don't care much for drag racing but do spend a lot of time with my local autocross club in my Mach 1 Mustang. So I am used to auto crossing with way to much power I am thinking a 4 cyl of some sort is a better route for a better handling car? The car also has to be a nice street car and handling car, So I will be looking into suspension and breaks too.

I apologize for my questions they are probably obvious Toyota knowledge. I just don't know toyotas that well yet, I have mostly worked on muscle cars specifically Mustangs and old Chevys.

3tc. Parts can be had in Canada, They were sold here. You can get one NA up to 180-200HP if you dare. There are crossmembers out there in the world that make it a bolt in swap.

You can get 140 out of a moderately built one, they are easy to work on and they make nice noises.

I second the 3TC idea. Easily the most bang for your buck... I hear they can take 175hp with stock internals (although I'd do rod bolts at least). Low-pressure turbo and EFI if you want to get fancy. Megasquirt. Reliable and torquey.

The 3S-GE BEAMS engine is probably the best choice, in my opinion. Especially since it makes over 200hp from factory.

It's a very hard choice between that and a 1UZ-FE, but the 1UZ will need an aftermarket bellhousing to bolt a manual (standard) transmission.

or an adapter plate. works well, but use red loctite. there's a plate to bolt to the 350z six speed which i think is cheaper than some of the w58 or r154 plates.

also just to screw with you:
    V6
    1mzfe non vvti, 348lb
    1mzfe w/ vvti, 346 lb
    3mzfe, 351 lb
    3vzfe 469 lb
    2grfe, 359 lb

    maybe an aluminum 6?

My car does nothing but oversteer wildly with a 1UZ V8 and a curb weight of 2455 lbs.

It's all about suspension setup. A 1uz swapped ae86 with proper suspension and steering work will handle better than a stock ae86 gts easily.

I'd say first step is getting an ae86 cross member and rack and pinion steering in it.
    Then BEAMS!
I am biased tho, I love my beams, its perfect for a corolla/celica
Put on itbs and get the nostalgic noise and the reliability of efi

    The six speed is amazing

Thanks for the idea. I have never Heard of a 3tc, but I am pretty limited on my Toyota Knowledge.

That is how I am feeling too a tough choice between both motors. I guess I would need to find out what speedometer would work with either engine. Would the Stock one be a possibility?

Good to know the transmission option thank you.

Sweet. What car do you have the 1UZ swapped into? What kind of 0-60 time you get in your car?

What kind of performance is your 86 getting like 0-60 etc and I imagine it is quite balanced that way?

Put a Fc20 in it. Use a dakota digital tach and speedo adapter. It's a better engine then a 1uz or a beams.

If you want to keep it toyota and well balanced then beams. If you're a muscle head then 1uz.

beams for 'install and enjoy reliable stock 200hp for ages' .. 3TC for easy-ish parts avail, though out of the box, you wont have the benefits of EFI..

18RG/2TG were great in their day.. that day has passed.. and with it, easy parts availability etc.

Reasons why I chose 1UZ over beams 3sge.

    -Cost
-Parts availability, can walk into the parts store instead of ordering online from Japan.
    -More HP, much more Torque
-I think the mild 1uz is more reliable than the high strung beams 3sge.
-More potential for big hp later
    -V8 has the cool factor
-1UZ gets better MPG than a beams in a corolla when driving normally.

I don't really consider the 1UZ to be that much heavier than 3SGE beams, they're iron block right? 1UZ is all aluminum. Can never find info on 3sge dry weight.

I've never measured the 0-60 but it's less than 5 seconds, the 1uz ae86 is faster than my buddies new generation camaro z28 from a stop to top of 5th gear.

1uz is 110 pounds more than a beams. Both have aluminum blocks.

    well heres my weigh in.

For my 77 celica liftback i went 1uz for a few reasons:
only out weighs my 20r by about 50lbs. so the vehicles balance doesn't change
solid platform for any future mods and the 6 bolt mains make it super strong
makes more power then any other stock motor for the money

just a couple extra notes for you.
speedhut.com - makes a gps speedo in kmh and it fits in the stock housings with a little bit of dremel work. all my gauges are from them.
beams 6spd requires you to cut out the floor to fit it in the car and that will probably rule out stock center console.
there is a guy on 1stgencelica.com that makes a direct swap engine cradle for the 70-74 celica. has a few options for motor mounts and has rack mounts as well.

I do like the beams though and am planning to put one with the 6spd into my 72 Celica. i look at the motor as a modern version of the 18rg. its a dohc 2.0L that is rev happy and plenty of power for the Celica in stock form. also the ITBs on it will give it a similar sound to side drafts.

I had no Idea there was a kit out there that adapts a digital tack/speedo out put on the transmission to a vintage cable operated speedometer/tach. I will look into this thank you.

I was wondering about parts availability on the Beams here in Canada but that makes sense that the parts for the beams would come from Japan. I like your logic for 1UZ swap. If you are getting below 5 seconds for 0-60 I am impressed that is getting close to where my Mach 1 Mustang is at and I am very happy with its performance.

Good to know about the engine only out waying the 20R by about 50lbs. Being all aluminum must help with that. 6 bolt mains pretty sweet. My dad when he was building his 350 small block for his Nova was impressed with its 4 bolt mains so this 1uz must be bullet proof. Thanks for the other tips. Do know who on 1st gen makes the engine swap cradle?
