80 series land cruiser / LX450.. tempted by this

I've been thinking of upgrading my 4runner to an 80 series and found a 97 LX450 for $3000 with front and rear lockers.

...but when something seems too good to be true.. it usually is.

It's in Montreal and that usually means huge rust and beat to crap.. and the google reviews from the dealer are as follows:

"Pay attention to these people. They sell vehicles often packed with hidden problem ."

"Worst customer service. I had to introduce myself 3 times to the SAAQ to finalize the transaction and to register the vehicle before they are able to do their job as they should . "It will be done tomorrow. " The next day, still not done . The service was impeccable until the sale . After , no consideration for the client. Broken promises I would rather pay more elsewhere than wasting much time ."

I'm not usually concerned about k's but this one has over 360 and I see some rust holes in the front quarter panels and the A pillar... this is usually serious right?

What do you guys think? Shipping would be $1000 and normally with lockers these go for $10,000+

**** that noise. You could fly to anywhere in the PAC NW with an extra couple grand and get something that isn't a basket case.
If there's one thing I've learned from the first two thirds of the MC Hammer Biography, it's that money never runs out.

If you see one that's not a basket case with lockers for 5k let me know and I'll fly out. for real!

I'm about to spend 2k in parts on my 4runner. If I can't get a locked LC soon I'll drive what I have for another year.

I am the king of sketchy junk buying/risk taking and I'll tell you this. If there's something with a potential profit and its not already sold in MTL. It's hot trash*

Here's some pics of the hot trash. I can't believe the ad is still up but it might be sold. Temped to call and ask for the VIN to do a carfax or something... I suspect this could have a salvage title because apparently Quebec allows cars to be re-titled after being written off?

you can see the rust hole in the front quarter

but this is the one that got me excited and terrified at the same time. Am I seeing huge rust hole in the A pillar?... also I see front and rear locker switch but sometimes this can be misleading. the ad doesn't say anything about lockers.

just fix your 4Runner, you already know what you have with it. That LX looks pretty damn haggard, don't let the tire dressing fool you lol

I love the body coloured rust on the fender. Pretty legit dealer fix there.

80 series cruisers never forget that they cost big money in the beginning. They like to be treated that way even in old age. Find one that's been treated well.

Don't buy the first one you see on kijiji. Even though it has 35's, and ARB bumpers, and a lift, and a winch, and a roof rack, and lockers, and a RTT... don't. Ask me how I know.

^^ Good to know, and I agree. Been reading up at ih8mud and the word is they're more expensive to maintain but also previous 4run owners say it's not worth building up a 4run to the level an 80 starts at. Also most previous 4run owners that went 80 series say they'll never go back to a 4run.

So far other Canadian guys I've talked to paid about 10k for theirs with lockers and had searched many months. I've decided not to put the $2k into doing coilovers on the 4run. Just going to fix it up and hopefully sell it for a decent price so i can afford an 80LC someday

Reasons for an 80 series with lockers to sell for less than $10,000:

    1.) More than 300,000kms
2.) Needs enough work to add up to $10,000.
    3.) It's a 1991/1992 with the 3fe engine.

91-92 FJ80's never came with lockers here in North America.

You're pretty much right though, and there's no way I'd let my 91 FJ80 with lockers and 360,000km sell for less than $10,000 either. Of course it's a completely rust-free truck that's been gone over top to bottom, but still. An 80 for that price is not an 80 you want to buy unless you're willing to spend many thousands to make it worth owning.

I believe I misspoke. I had an FJ80, it's now technically my buddy's (just sold it), but I can probably bring it by if you wanted to see it. We have a semi-shared stable of automotive delight.
