    Ye Rust Resto..

I got bored tonight, so I started finding holes and removing the tar paper from the 86... the strut towers were covered in fibreglass from one of the previous owners, so I pryed that off and to my surprise found a bunch of rust (yay)

The main reson I was removing the sound deadening is because it rusts underneath and I'm going to attemt to POR 15 everything possible. Believe it or not the best tool I found was the claw end of a hammer with the claws sharpened, it would hook underneath and pull it off in large chunks.

I pick up the sandblaster tomorrow.

Wow, and I thought mine had rust. That's some rust man, especially on those shock towers in the rear there... eek.

Once I blast them inside and out, if they are too far gone i'm going to make new upper mounts out of 3 inch pipe cut in half and reinforce them so hopefully I can run coilovers on them without any problems

Pls post some pics after you sandblast it. Curious to see the result as I was contemplating picking up a small sandblaster as well for the rust areas in my interior.

Why on earth would someone cover the shock towers with fibreglass? That's a formula for rust for sure... on a structural part of the car no doubt.
That's a fair bit of rust! Go nuts with the sandblaster and find out ALL the places the rust is hiding or you'll just end up doing this all again later!!

Day 2, Picked up the sandblaster today, pretty neat, works ok for $50

The easiest way to make a mess of yourself and your garage is a sandblaster, hands down.

You may be wondering why I stripped the side of the car, It had a dent there, so instead of working the metal back out, they filled it full of bondo, and it was rusting underneath. So off it came and an hour with a dolly has it almost perfect. nothing a light skim of filler can't fix.

The arches on this car are surprisingly good, Just for ****s and giggles I rolled them out cause I was bored of grinding off gobs of bondo.

The worst of it, luckly it's not into the unibody, just the rear quarter metal.

    I hate Bondo.

I heard that too, but it only took me about 2 hours taking my sweet time to get it to that point.

I'm actually considering drilling spot welds and pulling off certain panels to get at it and fix it right.

I hate rust almost as much as I hate bondo.

EDIT: they also covered the front strut tower with fibreglass, there was a pinhole, where the brake bias valve is, now it's fairly big.. luckily it's in a flat section, so it's a real easy fix.

A couple of people have asked me where I got the sandblaster, It's a Gravity feed from Princess Auto, 59.99, sand is $10 for a 25kg bag... Glass is $20, but apparently cuts alot better, I may pick some up to mix..... you'll need a decent air compressor to make it work right, and shorten the hose they supply you with in the kit to get a decent feed of sand.. it took about an hour to get it setup so it worked half decent.

EDIT: Oh and buy a hood for sandblasting, my ears are full of sand cause I was using a welding mask for protection.

Did you use glass or sand Tom? I have sand now and it takes a fair amount of passes to get the metal clean.. I'm wondering if glass works any better.

I rolled the lips out and welded them last night, but I wasn't happy with the way it turned out so I did more work on them today.. Last night I tryed to roll the lips to meet, but it made it look really odd so I ground that down and redid them this morning. I also separated the inner fender and the fender and sandblasted in between.. no rust in there! I'll have to get pics of it later... I forgot to because I was in a rush.

I wish, those look like some expensive pieces of metal...

Well today I got my flare done the way I wanted it, and all metal in the actual arches cut and cleared out so that it's all good metal I still have to fix in front of the arches, but it's some serious work, so i'm putting some thought into it.

Too lazy to narrate the pics right now. mabey later.

DO NOT SANDBLAST WITHOUT A GOOD BREATHING MASK

Using Sand or even worse, Glass bead without a breathing mask in an open environment (ie: not in a cabinet) like that is a bad bad bad idea.. Yeah, in the very short term you'll survive... but mid-long term exposure can cause Silicosis..

I usually do it with the garage door open and the fans venting outside.. but i'll get a mask asap.
